Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Daredevil Spawned from the Same Accident?

According to Cracked’s Maxwell Yezpitelok both the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel’s Man without Fear Matt Murdock were created from the same accident.

Daredevil’s origin story which is told in Daredevil #1, shows young Matt Murdock (who at the time can see) save a blind man from getting run over by a truck carrying canisters of toxic waste, only to get a canister to the face causing him to go blind but also increasing his other senses.

Daredevil #1 (1964)

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are born from an almost identical accident, in which a blind old guy is saved from getting run by a kid who gets smacked in the face with a canister of toxic waste for his troubles.  This canister ends up going down the drain with the turtles and turns them into the Mean Green Machines we grew to love and their sensei, the giant rat.

This connection makes a lot of sense since it would explain what happened to the toxic waste that blinded Daredevil as a child and it would also make you wonder why nobody thought to call a HazMat team back then.

While some might think this connection between the two are merely a coincidence others would say it’s intentional since  both Turtles’ creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are admittedly huge fans of Daredevil, and also because Daredevil appeared 20 years before the Turtles giving them plenty of time to rip Daredevil’s origin story off.  However since Marvel doesn’t own the rights to the Ninja Turtles (yet) we can’t say that the Turtles exist in the Marvel Universe yet so this theory will just have to go in the wild conspiracy pile until the day Marvel decides to kill another part of my childhood and buy them up.

  1. While certainly not official, yes the Turtles were supposed to be formed from the same accident. This was one of many parody elements in the original TMNT story. This is also how the “Foot” clan got it’s name. It’s a parody on the Marvel Hand Ninjas.

I’ve thought that since I first became aware of the TMNTs–in 1985–via an Army buddy from Boston

How Daredevil and TMNT are connected:
A blind man was walking in the street. He was about to be hit until a boy holding a small tank with 4 turtles inside pushed him out of the way. The truck driver stopped the truck too late and canisters of Radioactive Waste hit the boy in the eyes. The canister broke open blinding the eyes of the boy. The boy dropped the turtles. The tank that had the turtles broke as it hit the ground. The turtles fell into the sewers. So, did the canister of Ooze (Easier to say). The ooze poured all over the turtles. A mutant rat creature found them. He tried to wipe of the ooze so that they wouldn’t turn into mutants like he did.(I am using the 2012 Splinter Origin. Kinda…) It was too late. The turtles were mutated into walking, talking kid like turtles. The rat trained them under the art of ninjitsu. They later were named after famous painters and became fighting vigalantes known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As for the boy… The boy was at the hospital for months. He learned his father “mystirously” disappeared. He was later adopted by a blind Janiter who worked in the hospital. The blind man was a friend of Homoto Yoshi (Splinter). The man tought the boy ninjitsu and to fight with no fear. He later became Daredevil.

    Neat story right?
